ECHOES OF MEMORY 2016 // From 12th of November to 28th of February

The project entitled “Echoes of Memory 2016” pays tribute to the river Turia and the city of Valencia (Spain).

Inspired by the history of the river and its evolution over time, the artist Bob Verschueren (Brussels, 1945) creates an ensemble of installations to recall the role of the former tributary and how it has been transformed by man’s intervention.

The main parts of the project are arranged to form a short walk along the number XIV stretch of the aforementioned river, inviting passers-by to “become immersed” in not only a visual, but also sensorial, experience. Echoes of memory becomes a reality through the poetry of Dominique Sintobin and the sounds of the former riverbed generated by two components in the installation.

Listen to the poems of Dominique Sintobin:

The ancient voices of Turia I

The ancient voices of Turia II

Bob Verschueren’s work is based on a bond created between himself and a space, which inspires him to reveal small groups of nature and give them artistic value. Always driven by respect and professionalism, he works on the material giving more importance to the marks left by the experience, which he recreates in a work of art. He invites us to see languages that are present in the landscape, which make up the essence of “this land”.
For Bob neither the beginning nor the end is so important, but the passing of time, the drifting. He redefines work as a process, generating an experience with the place which indicates its new nature to him.

Bob Verschueren :

The work changes and moves, as if it were alive. For me it was an important discovery: that matter can be transformed without any intervention. You begin to realise that this material goes beyond a formal level, that it refers directly to life and provides us with a kind of mirror in which we can see ourselves…

From 13 November to 28 February, the ensembles that comprise the artistic project Echoes of Memory will be installed in the vicinity of the City of Arts and Sciences (Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias) and can be visited free of charge.

OF THE SCULPTURES | 11/01/2014
3. GETTING TO KNOW THE SMÖRFS | 25/01/2014

The sculptures by Venske & Spänle form a population:  organic shapes in marble that survive over time, with their own particular background, evolving and extending throughout the world.

These creatures, known as Smörfs, exist in a parallel world: they live alongside us, sharing our spaces and often interacting with the everyday objects they encounter along the way. They are abstract beings with their own character and personality, which turn up in different places from exhibitions or trade fairs to public spaces, parks and industrial areas) populating our planet.

The Smörfs have hatched in Valencia and guided by Fondo Arte-AS they make their way through the city, getting to know the architecture, the people… They move along the former riverbed of the River Turia, discovering and exploring their surroundings until they reach the San Pio V Fine Art Museum. Their visit to Valencia comes to an end with them exploring shop windows in the city centre.

ALAMEDA LLUM 2012 // From 15th of November to 28th of December

Valencia is transformed. Art invades the streets with the Alameda Llum project in the form of eleven projections that intervene with, and transform, the public space. The gardens of the River Turia become the protagonist of this contemporary art installation, with which the creator questions our relationship with nature, inviting us to take part.

For one and a half months, in the section of the former riverbed near the Science Museum, Riera’s installation will give visitors the chance to stroll, observe, imagine, reflect and enjoy. The project is an initiative of FONDO ARTE-AS and is sponsored by Valencia City Council, the security company Feix and the winery Nodus. It also counts on collaboration from the studio of architecture Ramón Esteve, the furniture company Vondom and the jazz duo Atteno’clock.

Born in Avilés, Asturias (1964), Javier Riera is one of the most outstanding creators of his generation. A significant evolution is apparent in his work, which culminates in him adapting to the most accurate technology of our time. Starting with paint and subtle references to nature, he has ended up creating his own landscape with the intervention of geometry.

Each day at dusk -between 15 November and 28 December- and with the garden acting as a screen, eleven projections of light will transform the customary everyday landscape.

Javier Riera:

“This intervention has a contemplative character through which I attempt to produce a certain beneficial effect in the spectator. I hope that they are transported, as far as possible, to a place they have not visited before or even somewhere they have perhaps visited and subconsciously want to go back to. I hope it heightens their awareness without causing narcissistic distress, but creating a bridge towards something positive and necessary, which is inside us all but is not always easy to reach.”
